Political Career:
Earlier in his political career, while running for Attorney General in 1990, Hutchinson was defeated by Winston Bryant in a close contest. Hutchinson then served as the co-chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party for five years after losing the 1990 contest.
After considering running against Bumpers in 1992, Hutchinson opted to defer to Mike Huckabee, who faced Bumpers and lost, and in 1996, he ran and was elected to Congress in Arkansas. He was also easily re-elected to the House of Representatives in 1998, defeating an underfunded Democratic competitor with an overwhelming majority of the vote, and in November 2000, he won unopposed.
While in office, illegal substances, especially methamphetamine, was a major problem he tackled. Hutchinson was also a prosecutor in the impeachment trial of former President Bill Clinton.
Campaign finance reform was a major priority for Hutchinson, and he contributed to the effort by offering an alternative proposal to the Christopher Shays and Marty Meehan legislation that he opposed.
To no avail, Hutchinson made an attempt to alter the civil asset forfeiture reform bill. This aimed to stop police from seizing private property on the basis of a mere suspicion of its connection to any criminal investigation.
Hutchinson was then named Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration in 2001, and in 2003, he led the Boarder and Transportation Security Directorate division of the Department of homeland security. He left in 2005 as the first ever Undersecretary.
Hutchinson became the Republican candidate for governor in Arkansas in 2006, but he lost to a Democratic candidate Mike Beebe, an attorney general. He moved on but in December of 2010, when asked to join The Constitution Project’s Guantanamo Task Force, Hutchinson graciously agreed to serve, and this was because of his belief that it was “something crucial for our national security and our battle against terrorism,” he said to the Associated Press.
He then ran again as a Republican candidate for governor in 2014, and he defeated Democratic U.S. Representative Mike Ross in the race for the office. As of 2018, he had approximately two-thirds of the vote, making him reelected.
For the next two years, Hutchinson served as vice chair of the national governors Association before succeeding Andrew M. Cuomo as the organization’s leader in 2020–2022. As per Term constraints, Hutchinson is prevented from running for Arkansas governor again after 2022.
During his tenures, he resurfaced executions of prisoners in the state of Arkansas; he also decided to criminalize abortions although he would have loved to exempt rape and incest cases. The state legislature overrode his veto of a measure, this is because he would have made it illegal for transgender adolescents to obtain gender-affirming medication or surgery.
