In 1989, Patricia Ellen Meili, also known as Trisha Meili, was a 28 years old investment banker with an MA and MBA degree from Yale University and Yale School of Management.

She was jogging in Central Park, New York City, when she was brutally assaulted and raped, coming close to dying. She was found unconscious with her skull fractured and lost almost 75 percent of her blood.

It was a miracle that she survived, although she did suffer from amnesia when she recovered.

Five Black and Hispanic teenagers were later arrested and jailed for the crime: Korey Wise, 16, Yusef Salaam, 15, Anton McCray, 15, and Kevin Richardson, 14.

Due to public clamor, the Central Park Jogger case became a sensation. Even Donald Trump paid a whopping $85,000 just for advertisement to bring back death penalty.

Santana served six years and eight months in Goshen Secure Center, a juvenile detention facility located in Orange County, New York.

In 2002, serial rapist Matias Reyes confessed in prison that he was the one who did the crime, providing every detail of what happened which resulted in the reinvestigation of the case.

It was discovered that the confessions from the teenagers were coerced. It was also proved that Reyes was speaking the truth.

Santana, together with the rest of Central Park Five, was exonerated on December 19, 2002.

Right after that, the group sued the city of New York for the wrongful conviction, citing tremendous emotional distress, among others.

After more than a decade, New York City mayor Bill De Blasio agreed to settle in 2014 for an amount of $41 million – a million dollars for every year that the five served in prison.

With that amount of money, Santana was able to relocate and restart his life. Since he had difficulty adjusting to the free world, he became an activist for other people who were wrongly convicted and jailed.
