As Mayor

In the year 2001, he became the youngest mayor of Detroit at the age of 31. As mayor, he faced criticism for using governmental funds to lease Lincoln for his family’s personal use. The Belle Isle Aquarium and Belly Isle Zoo, which had been open for a century, were forced to close after he paid back $9,000 of the $210,000 in credit card debt.

For the first time since 2006, he gave his 71st state of the city address to Detroit, revealing that he had been diagnosed with diverticulitis. An upbeat message dominated most of the seventy-minute address, emphasizing the positive effects of action.

Kilpatrick is a Democrat. He was also a member of the Mayors Against Illicit Guns Coalition, a bipartisan anti-gun organization whose stated purpose was “to make the public safer by getting illegal guns off the streets.”

Kilpatrick’s membership status in the group was initially unclear following his federal charges conviction in 2013. His departure from Mayors Against Illegal Guns has not been announced as of September 2010; however, he was no longer recognized as a member as of December 2012.

Controversies, felony trials and incarceration

All the above started as he rose to power. A story circulated in 2003 when Deputy Chief Gary Brown claimed he was fired for investigating rumors of a wild party by Kilpatrick at the Manoogian Mansion. Soon after, his lifestyle choices were highly scrutinized by the public.

The following year, a new controversy arose when the DPD claimed a red Lincoln Navigator purchased for Kilpatrick’s now ex-wife was used for “undercover work.” He still was re-elected in 2005.

In 2007, a lawsuit was brought by Brown and another fired cop. Kilpatrick testified denying having an affair with his chief of staff, Christine Beatty, who was the wife of Lou Beatty, but the jury sided against him.

A lawyer for Kilpatrick said the mayor had lied and presented transcripts of text communications between Kilpatrick and Beatty. The appeal was dismissed, and the policemen received over $8 million.

The text messages were then made public. Kilpatrick apologized publicly and accused his detractors of racism. Unfortunately, his community and city council backing began to dwindle.

In 2008, Kilpatrick fell further from grace when Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged him with eight felonies and also an accusation of obstruction of justice. Kilpatrick was found to have broken his bail terms by traveling to Windsor and reportedly assaulting two Wayne County Sheriff’s deputies.

In September 2008, he resigned and pleaded guilty to obstructing justice, and he got 120 days in jail.

Kilpatrick failed to register assets and turn over tax rebates in 2010, a judge concluded, and he got five years in prison. The feds were now charging Kilpatrick’s pals and acquaintances.

Miller helped build the federal case against Kilpatrick. The federal court case lasted months, and the jury had to deliberate for two weeks.

On the 11th of March, 2013, Kilpatrick was found guilty of 24 federal felonies, including mail and wire fraud. The jury unanimously decided Kilpatrick abused his position as mayor to profit himself. He forced contractors to pay to operate in the city, utilized a civic fund for personal vacations, received bribes, and never paid taxes on his excess income.

He then got 28 years in federal prison, and he tried to repeal it, but it was refused. It wasn’t until recently that his remaining supporters urged Trump to pardon or commute Kilpatrick’s sentence. Trump commuted Kilpatrick’s sentence the day before he left office.
